What are Idea Pin "Takes" on Pinterest, and How to Use Them?

Everything you need to know about Pinterest’s newest feature: Takes

Pinterest have been putting a lot of energy into Idea Pins, and new features and functionality for this fresh pin type just keep on coming. If you’re not sure what Idea Pins are or how to use them, read this blog post first, and come back to this one later. One of the most recent things to be added to Idea Pins is “Takes”, a feature that allows you to reply to someone else’s Idea Pin with your own (and allow others to do the same on your Idea Pins). If you add a Take to an Idea Pin, it will appear both underneath the original pin, and on your profile with your other Idea Pins.

It’s a fun feature for sure, and reminiscent of the features on Instagram and TikTok that allow you to reply to comments with videos, but the difference here is the intention: to share ideas with each other. So now you know what Takes are, let’s talk about why you might like to use them in your Pinterest marketing strategy.

Why Use Pinterest Takes?

  • Allowing your audience to leave their Take on your idea pin is a great way to interact with your community, and help them interact with each other.

  • If one of your idea pins gets a lot of Takes added to it, it’s likely that pin will score high on engagement, and will then be shown to more people.

  • It’s a great way of encouraging user generated content around your brand.

  • Adding your Take to someone else’s idea pin could be a great way of getting more views on that pin. If you are strategic about the accounts you do this with, you could be introducing yourself to a larger audience (eg. if you add your Take to a pin by Pinterest themselves, a celebrity or a large brand).

How to use Takes on Idea Pins

If you want to experiment with Takes, here are the steps you need to set them up:

  • On your Idea Pins, in the advanced settings before posting, toggle the “allow Takes” setting on. This will mean other users can add their Takes to your pin.

  • If you want to add your Take to another user’s pin, click the rectangle with a plus in the bottom righthand corner. You can then create an Idea Pin in exactly the same way you would normally. It will publish in the Takes section on that pin, and on your own profile.

Some ideas on how to use Pinterest Takes in your marketing

Now you know why you might want to use Takes, and how, you’ll need some strategic ways of incorporating them into your Pinterest marketing strategy. Here’s some inspiration for you:

  • Encourage your customers to share how they use or style your product.

  • Collaborate with influencers or brand ambassadors.

  • If you’re sharing a DIY, encourage other users to try it and share their results.

  • If you’re a service based business, ask your audience a question and encourage them to share their answers.

  • Create a gift guide, and encourage other businesses to add their complimentary products.

  • Share your favourite recipe, and ask your audience to share theirs.

  • Share your business story, and encourage your customers to share their story with you too.

  • Create a home tour or a workspace tour, and invite your audience to do the same.

There are so many ways to use Takes on Pinterest, and it’s worth experimenting with a few ideas yourself to see how this new feature can help you grow your account. One more tip to remember, is to include a call to action in your Idea Pin itself if you want people to add their Take. You can do this by including a page at the end with an arrow sticker pointing to the button in the corner, or by adding text to the final page. This helps your audience know how you’d like them to interact with you, and will likely increase engagement on your pin.

Have you used Takes yet? I’d love to hear any results you noticed, and any other ideas you have!
