Document Your Process:

One of my favourite ideas around content creation and marketing is from Gary Vee, which is to “document, not create”. The temptation sometimes is to feel like every single piece of content you create has to be brand new and made from scratch, but this advice from Gary Vee is a reminder to document the things you’re already doing and turn that into content. Let’s face it, people are nosy and love a behind the scenes look into your brand, even your every day activities that you think are boring can be fascinating to someone else. So here are some ideas around documenting your process which you could turn into video content:

Show Off Your Products:

Showing your products in video format as well as still images can do wonders for sales, because it’s so much easier for a potential customer to visualise them in moving image. This style of video doesn’t have to be complicated, but can have a huge impact on your marketing and social media posts. Some ideas for video that shows off your product range are:

  1. A slow pan around your product in situ.

  2. Your product in use.

About You:

If you’re a personal brand, content that allows your audience to get to know you a little bit more and relate to you as a maker can really help you connect and build trust. Video content like this doesn’t necessarily have to feature you speaking on camera, although it could! There are all sorts of ways you could creatively show more of your personality in your content, a few ideas are:

  1. The story so far.

  2. Your journey to the studio

  3. Your training

  4. Workspace tour

  5. What are your favourite tools?

  6. 3 little known facts about you

  7. Your biggest design inspirations

  8. A day in the life

Your Industry / Expertise:

Every piece of content doesn’t have to relate directly to your product, it could also give advice, tips and inspiration around your industry or niche as a whole. For example, if you sell wedding decorations, could you do a series of short bitesize videos with wedding planning tips? If you sell products for kids, could you create some content around entertaining kids at the weekend? Some more ideas are:

  1. Q&As and FAQs

  2. Bitesize tips videos

  3. The ultimate guide to choosing your ____

  4. Topical videos around trends or current events in your industry

  5. Debunk some common myths

Play with Different Video Formats:

As well as getting ideas from the subject of your video, you can also get creative with the format. There are so many different styles of video content to try, and most of them can be achieved with your smart phone. Why not have a go with some of these:

  1. A slideshow of static images

  2. An image with animated gifs on it (this is one of my favourite sneaky tips to make a video pin, and can be done on Canva).

  3. Time lapse (sped up video, try the app Hyperlapse)

  4. Multiple clips edited together

  5. Stop motion animation

  6. Live video

  7. Boomerang

  8. Cinemagraph (the one that looks like a still image but one aspect of it is moving)

  9. Gifs
